Des arrêtés préfectoraux peuvent interdire de nourrir les animaux sauvages ou errants, notamment les pigeons.

Cette interdiction a pour but d'éviter les risques d'insalubrité ou de gêne pour le voisinage.

Cette interdiction a également pour but de prévenir la transmission de maladies entre animaux sauvages et animaux domestiques ou de compagnie ou entre animaux sauvages et humains.

Cette interdiction est souvent présentée dans un règlement sanitaire départemental.
